Back in Holland

Wow what a whirlwind trip to Luxembourg. The car trip there is four and half hours and the freeways here are huge. Your never are on a small country road like in Australia there are dual or three lane highways during the whole trip there and back.

The comp was very interesting in the fact that it was only Seniors II and III and Adults open Latin. Intersting combination, most of the senior competitors were from Germany and Italy and a few from the other Australia :-P {AUSTRIA}

The fact that we have not trained that much showed, or it felt that way to us. There were fifteen couples on the floor in the early rounds and they also changed the heats around so you may have been in heat 1 for the waltz, heat 2 for tango etc and with that we missed doing the tango for seniors II :-/. So we thought ok that is that done and dusted and we would be out but we were then called back for the repercharge, only three couples would go through to the next round. Suffice to say that did not happen for us. Of course it is very hard to tell how others are dancing when you are dancing yourself. So I was looking forward to the evening session to see who went through.

Some of the competitors that were eliminated during the early rounds did not stay and left to drive home. One couple who were from Germany had a 200km journey home.

As I may have posted earlier, I had forgotten that the WDSF have two minute rounds and because there were only three different groups dancing we were on the floor often. It started at 10.00am and we had danced four times and finished by 12.30!

At home often the MC will make idle chit chat to give competitors breathing space but no they just went on to the next dance! No breathing space at all especially in the repercharege rounds.

During our lessons with Syliva we learnt some new moves, but not all of them we were confident enough to use. So we reverted to what we knew, but incorporated the shaping. We will incorporate them into our routines on our return.

We were not dissapointed that we did not get any further, it was what we expected. We knew the standard of dancing was higher in Europe. When we went back in the evening they had a parade with all the couples that made the quarter finals, which was nice. There were a few speeches in French, so I had no idea what they were about, such a beautiful language though.

So waited for the dancing to begin, I wanted to watch intently how these compeitors looked like on the floor and what we needed to emulate. The italians were brillant and the couple that I believed should win, the male patner was not a young man, I believe him to be in his sixties, their, styling, control and grace was wonderful to watch and I think they would have won both II and III. I have not yet checked the results. Their stamina is amazing I am sure those two minute rounds done regularly makes them super fit.

Not that it made me dispondent but more determined to do better. If this smaller comp made us feel this way what will our experience in Blackpool do…..The journey continues.

LUXEMBORG

SORRY FOR THE CAPS; THIS KEYBOARD IS VERY DIFFERENT MANY OF THE LETTERS ARE IN A DIFFERENT PLACE; CAPS LOCK IS ON AND I CANT FIND THE THING TO CHANGE IT;

Thanks to Jqcaues he just found the control to chanqge the cqps lock but everything thqt hqs q q is meqnt to be q ‘a’.

We survived our first comp. I had forgotton about WDSF and the length of their rounds being two minutes. Strange comp with ony Seniors II and III plus adult Latin only. No modern in Adults which is a shame.Surprisingly stamina was OK but by the end I was glad we did not make quarter final. Of course I would have loved to. But was happy to have had this experience. I will go into more detail when I get back to the Netherlands.

Ciao people

Dancing

Had two lessons with Sylvia yesterday, so in all we had four lessons one in each style. She has made some changes, some of which we can implement. Others we need more time to make it natural. We have not trained as much as we have like, but as they say the show must go on.

I would love to have a year here for our dancing. Not sure how that could be financed but would be a great experience. We are warming up with our new vouge, to help keep in touch with that. so much to learn an implimnent and  running out of time before our first competition. We leave tomorrow morning, we have tonight managed to get an hour and half of training in and it went like a flash, did all four styles tango did not go as well as planned.  I am sure on the day it will all gel.

Got to have my hair done today thanks to Carmen my sisterinlaw, she did a nice warm colour with highlights and did a French roll for me. will be good to see how it holds up till Saturday. hair nets and good hairspray are a wonderful thing.

OK now have to go pack and will post after the first comp. Have fun all.

Shopping day

Tuesday today going into our second week. It was cold and wet today although there were moments of moderate weather but you could not go without a coat. Unlike Australia where you have 8 months of good weather and four months of colder to cool weather they have it the other way around.

After our morning walk and coffee, we took the tram to city, and went to the market in the city,it is a great place to get some fruit and veggies and fish, typical Saturday flea market, with some second hand stalls and cheap socks and underwear. Some trinkets and of course flowers, they are always cheap here, no excuse not to have fresh flowers in your home. The cold today was the wind it is very tiring, so you crave to get into the warmth. Nothing some warm chips and mayo won’t fix…it is a market tradition, standing under the the verandah of a local library which was on the edge of the market in the pouring rain. The biggest seagulls I have ever seen were waiting for you to drop your chip to get a free feed. The other funny thing that happened as we were walking to the market a gull must have dropped its prey,  we heard a thud to find a dead half eaten bird drop from the sky, and almost on our feet! We only had to wait a moment before we saw the gull who had dropped it, come back to retrieve his/her meal.

We headed into the equivalent of David Jones to get out of the cold and spend a penny literally, it costs money to go to the loo, so far we have paid 50 euro cents for a trip to the loo, on that note of paying you also have to pay at big local shopping centres to park your car, so no complaints back home people.

We were suppose to go training today, someone had access to the a studio, but we did not wake up till late and had a slow start. So nothing on the dancing front today, feel a bit lost when I have not gone training. We are such creatures of routine that when we dont do something, you feel outside your comfort zone.

I think Phoebe is going to be staying with us this evening and coming to watch us train and our lessons tomorrow. Will see what she thinks, will explain to her that she has to stay there for quite a few hours. Backup plan is to take something she can entertain herself with.

Last night was a busy one, after a lesson and training, went share a meal with Jer and the gang, before going to pick up Jacques mum and take her visiting some of Jacques family, by the time we got home and to bed it was almost

1am. Tonight will be an early night, that is the plan but we know what happens to those. :-O

Mothers Day in the Netherlands

Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there, it has been a busy couple of days. Trying to do so much each day. Visiting family and catching up with friends. So each night we are in bed late, nothing unusual about that :-) .

Finally got to get on the floor to practice and have a lesson with Sylvia. All I am going to say is shaping shaping shaping. What I have learnt you can never shape enough. Not sure if we will implement everthing It wont have gone into the memory banks that quickly. I am so excited to see some dancing this weekend and get inspired.

Lots of lessons and practice this week leading up to luxemberg open.

Today was Mothers day. Very good day catching up with extended f

amily and a brother of Jacques and finishing  off the day with a  lovely dinner at a  local restaurant with Jacques mother. The restaurant staff we genuine people who loved to give great service something I have not experienced for along time. So  all in all with Good company, it was a great night, now chilling out before heading for bed.

Mothers day 2012

For the first time in 11 years I have been with mum on mothers day. It’s not that I didn’t wanted to go, I just wasn’t able to get there.

This year it was different, I was there and so was Yvonne and it was a great day. After treating her with a dinner, at a vey good Italian Ristorante near her home in Krimpen a/d Yssel, we spend the evening with her at her home.

We had a great time and it was as if time had stood still and the years never passed, funny but we always seem to be able to pick-up where we left off so many years ago.

Returning to her place we spoilt her with another present, an electronic photo album, that we filled partly with images of us dancing and the great grandchildren.  Mum looked very happy with all the attention she got today from us and all other family members.

We love you mum, strongheaded as we are, that’s what keeps us together…. love.

Day Two

Well the day started early enough woke up at 5.45- Dont think the body clock is in sync yet.

Had a reasonably full day today. Working on a tablet is quite frustrating but better than nothing I supose it does not have all the functionality of a normal keyboard and going back to make changes is a pain in the you no what!. We started the day early as we had plenty to do and silly to pay for parking until two if you are not going to be in the apartment so we were out the door by 9.00am. Went to a big shopping centre to buy Jacques mother something for Mothrs Day bought her an electronic picture frame. She is quite infirmed now but good in spirits. We hope to take her out to dinner on Mothers Day. She can’t walk without a frame and getting down the stairs of her apartment it a challenge for her.

We then went training and got to meet our Dutch coach Silvia, she was lovely we will have our first lesson on Saturday. Not sure why but everything is caotic around us at the moment and when we got to the training centre I realised one of my shoes was not in the bag! Jacques had to
Drive back and pick it up from the apartment. roundbtrip of 50 Minutes :-/, What a dill we seem to be forgetting things or misplacing things, hope that settles down quickly.

But it was nice to get on the floor and practice. I love practicing just as much as competing which is a good thing :-) . Worked on some waltz, tango and foxtrot. Interesting that all the dance studios that I have been to in Holland have bar facilities. I think they must have all their soicals at there own studios. we hope to find a social on our journey.

We then went to find a place that sells practice clothes not far away from the studio and came across this little town and decided we would have a late lunch. We want to eat our big meal in the middle of the day and hopefully lose a couple of kilos or at least maintain what we are :-p, very hard around this place with all the lovely treats that are on offer.

We caught up with Jacques mother again and Jeremy, Natasja and the gang, those kids are full of energy it is wonderful I wish I could get some of that :-) .

OK off to bed and see if I can get some sleep or better sleep.

Take care..

First day in the Netherlands.

Well the flight across from KL was a good one. Not too bumpy. Funny thing when we got on the plane they did not have us sitting together. I am sure Jacques thought this was his lucky day :-P but a kind person sharing my row swapped seats and we had three seats between the two of us. We could stretch out a bit more.

The landing was great often those bumpy ones dont make me feel too good :-/ but this pilot did a fantasic job. It was raining when we landed and we got in earlier than expected. So we had to kill some time before we could pick up the hire car. So at 6.30 we were having coffee and cake.

We got to see some of the traffic jams they have here, dear old Adelaide is quite spoilt. Managed to get some sleep before heading out to see Jacques mother who has not been welll. It is probably needless to say that she was really pleased to see her son.:-) Made her some of my groeten soep and she liked it :-) .

We then made our way to do some shopping and get a sim card. I always thought it would be easy to get connected and where we are staying we have access to wireless but when travelling you have to buy a sim card in each country to get the cheap rates. Which I dont think is very friendly.

After all of that we caught up with Jacques son Jer and wife Natasja and the three grand kids. They were all well and happy to see opa :-)

At night, heading back to our accommodation and finding a park was not that easy….all the spots in our street were taken and we had to park down the street. You need to get money in the meter by 9.00. No free street parking even for residence. We are staying in inner city Rotterdam. So I would understand why people dont have cars. Goodnight world another day beckons after a good nights sleep.

First leg

Left from Adelaide to Kuala Lumpur on a Malaysia Airlines flight. Uneventful but cold, someone at the front must have decided that it was hot and within minutes most of the passengers were wrapped in the supplied blankets.

KL Airport is pretty but it ain’t Changi baby!

With a limited amount of shops it is almost as boring as Westfield Marion….. lol

Well the next part is KL to Amsterdam were the weather appears to freezing…..

What to pack and what not!

Hi there,

Well we are getting ready for the first leg of our trip. No we are not boarding the plane yet, we are merely packing.

Two suitcases and so much, or little, to take with us and I guess the question will always be what to bring and what not. Of course the tail-suit and gown will be there alongside the shoes and accessories but it is the stuff you will wear on a day to day base.

We have decided to bring the bear minimum and buy the stuff we need in Europe, for better or worse, we have no idea what weather we will encounter.

Looking at the weather reports from Europe we decided to bring at least our winter coats..
